It begs for answers why out of the multiple languages spoken in Nigeria, none is adopted as a common language. Yet, Nigerians struggle to study the language more than they do their native languages.

In 1882, the English language was well-known by the elites and their children. Doing business with British partners became prestigious, so the traders were also among those who learned English. Through the expansion, the English language became the official language in Nigeria.
However, the Nigerian Pidgin English (NPE), originated as a lingua franca for trade purposes amongst the Nigerians and the Portuguese merchants during the 17th century.
