What indices were considered before Nigeria emerged the best or largest economy in Africa?

I don’t know about other Nigerians, but I sit to wonder how Nigeria manage to become one of the world’s best-emerging economies. What made that possible? Is it just a title gained considering its persistently swelling population size or its landmass? What indices were considered before Nigeria could emerge as the best or largest economy in Africa?
