Nigerians are obsessed with zoning and quota system in political participation. The Igbo has used this as an instrument to drive the call for their emancipation for a marginalized ethnic nationality to becoming president. However, the height was seen in 2023 presidential election when Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared that it is his turn to rule, hence the slogan, emi lo kan. Now, the question, is zoning/quota a good democratic instrument?

A quota system can be an effective means of ensuring the equitable distribution of opportunities, political offices, and resources in a nation, but it also has its drawbacks and limitations.
On the positive side, a quota system can help to address historical inequalities and promote diversity and representation. For example, quotas for women or members of marginalized communities can help to increase their representation in political office or the workplace. This can lead to more inclusive decision-making and policies that better reflect the needs and perspectives of different groups.
However, there are also potential drawbacks to a quota system. One concern is that it can lead to a focus on meeting quotas rather than on merit or qualifications. This can result in individuals being selected for positions or opportunities based solely on their demographic characteristics, rather than their abilities or experience. There is also a risk that quotas can be perceived as tokenism, where individuals are selected primarily to meet a quota rather than because they are genuinely valued for their contributions.
Furthermore, quotas may not address the underlying structural barriers that prevent equal access to opportunities and resources. To truly address inequality, it is often necessary to address the root causes of these disparities, such as discrimination, lack of access to education and healthcare, and other social and economic factors.
In conclusion, a quota system can be a useful tool for promoting equity, but it should be implemented carefully and with consideration for its potential drawbacks. It is important to also address the underlying causes of inequality and work towards creating a more just and equitable Nigeria.

Zoning or Quota system in a democratic arrangement is supposed to address the fact every one can not lead or occupy a position at the same time. It also suggest that opportunities and offices should be shared and occupied by every one at a given time. However, there is a topic of setback around it on the premise that a particular region may not have a qualified person to fill in the opportunity at a time, and would present a half-baked. But there is the place of competition in the sense that a people knowing that they deserve a position or an opportunity will prepare for it before time.
